Personalised Jewellery is usually created using two main techniques, both with very different qualities. Each technique has it’s own place in the Jewellery market and appeals to different tastes. In this blog post, I will endeavour to explain the differences between the two.
The engraved collection here at Stamped On is made by computer guided machine engraving. When you place your order with me I send your personalisation details to my Engravers. They then mock up the jewellery design using specialised software and send a proof to me for approval. Once approved, the engraving is done by a computer guided engraving machine. It then goes through a wash process and is shipped to me for final rinse, polish and preparation for delivery.
The process of engraving involves removing metal from the jewellery surface which gives a neat finish both front and back. Machine engraving has a uniform look with evenly spaced and consistent depth of letters.
The design options available using engraving techniques are remarkable. I am excited to see what exciting new designs are joining the collection.
Hand Stamping (sometimes called embossing) is performed by hand using steel stamps and a hammer. Each letter and design is an individual steel stamp. The Stamper lines up the stamp by eye, holds it in place, and hits the end of the stamp with a hammer to impress the letter or design into the metal. This process is done for every single letter until your name or message is complete. Once stamping is complete, your jewellery is polished and, if requested, a special enamel added to the letter indentations to blacken the details and help them to stand out more.
Hand stamped jewellery will have variations in character depth or spacing. There is often some marking or indentation to the back of thinner designs created by the movement of the metal. The charm of handstamped jewellery is the rustic imperfection. A well stamped piece of jewellery is a beautiful thing to see and while perfection is impossible, at Stamped On I strive for a high quality finish and will not send out an item if I would not proudly wear it myself.
Whether your jewellery is engraved or hand stamped, all of the jewellery here at Stamped On is lovingly hand finished in my home studio with attention to detail. I put a little of my heart and soul into every piece. True to my slogan, your jewellery items are all handcrafted just for you with your loved ones in mind.
